Port of Tanjung Pelepas

Gelang Patah, Johor

Located on a mangrove plain, on water- edged land, the architectural concept for the Port of Tanjung Pelepas began with a thread of continuity intended to knit together the port facilities’ seven disparate masses. Over the flat expanse of land on which it stands, massing and silhouette became vital for informing the image of the port.

Naturally, the ocean and shipping became the design’s main inspiration, along with concepts like the canted prow of a ship as it cuts through water, cantilevered steel gantries, and the rollers of an undulating sea. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas was fast-tracked and completed in twelve months. These time constraints resulted in a design and construction process fueled by a high degree of control and coordination between client, consultant, contractor and fabricator.
