Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka’s (DBP) original name was ‘Balai Pustaka’ was established in Johor Bahru on June 22, 1956 and it was placed under the Ministry of Education. DBP is to develop the use of Malay language and Malay literature in Malaysia.
DBP building was declared a heritage site on 12 November 2009 and was placed under the National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645). The deterioration of the existing mural prompted DBP to propose its restoration and repair works. Additionally, DBP proposed to renovate the existing building to restore and conserve the historical features and value of the building.
The construction works started on February 2014 and is completed by October 2016. The prominent mural created in mosaic tiles based on a painting was by Ismail Mustam.
