SUNGAI PENCHALA MOSQUE
2017 – Sungai Penchala, Kuala Lumpur
Religious Building
The initial programme was to setup a knowledge centre that consisted of three main components, which includes a mosque that fits 1,500 pax, a teaching block and a hostel for students altogether providing people of all levels of the community to meet, mingle and learn together in a neutral
space. Due to a shortage of funds, the mosque was scaled down and now fits approximately 750 pax and now functions as a space to host the religious classes.
As the most symbolic building in Islam, the Kaaba, a pure form in shape, represents unity. It is where Muslims of the entire world congregate and prostrate towards in one singular, unified direction. Drawing inspiration from this, the square on plan generates a radial growth, like worshippers circumambulating the Kaaba.
