Permata Pintar Sports Park

Bangi, Selangor

Pusat Permata Pintar Auditorium and Sports Park are located on 20.15 acres in the University Kebangsaan Malaysia campus in Bangi, Selangor. As part of the Permata Pintar education programme, the school provides gifted Malaysian students with a focused and holistic learning environment. The design concept initiates a strong yet simple form, where structural shape is organically derived through the abstraction of the site’s natural valley and surrounding forest. The slopping nature of the site directs the seamless integration of the buildings formation to the land, enhancing the campus by anchoring the new auditorium as a primary gateway, and activating the sports park as part of the physical landscape. Made up of 3 connecting levels, the auditorium building is comprised of a lobby, auditorium hall, stage and back of house facility. The main feature is the 600 – person capacity auditorium hall, primarily catering to lectures, convocations, and the school’s musical theatre programmes.

The back of house will serve as a dressing room and rehearsal area, with VIP seating located at the second tier. The extended auditorium foyer generates a new public space, linking the plaza with visible meeting points. Natural and earth coloured materials are used to accentuate the organic composition of the auditorium – where a seamless aluminum cladding scales the facade, inspiring a rhythmic dual tone skin. Both the buidling’s envelope and interior employs themes of ‘exploration’ instilling a sense of tactility and play, prompting the users interaction.

Carved to the contours of the landscape in a cascading structure, the sports park provides the user with infinite views of the forest enclave. The main approach was to deconstruct the rigid constraints of a conventional sports complex, allowing the building programme to assimilate with the environmental context. Using the existing slopes, students are simultaneously able to view sporting activities while engaging socially on the ample green space. The sports park is divided into 2 main areas offering an Olympic size swimming pool and adjoining track facilities and football field. Additional amenities such as male and female changing rooms and gym are conveniently provided within the compound premises.
