The P11 nursery are situated in the heart of Putrajaya’s suburban residential neighbourhood. The P11 Nursery site is adjacent to residential units in Presint 11. This building provide facilities for over 200 children, between the ages of one to four. The design concept of these nurseries stemmed from the need to cultivate a nurturing environment for children to learn, play, and grow. Recognising the importance of a learning facility during a child’s formative years, the nurseries are divided into several blocks – classrooms, infant care, canteen, administration, and a multi-purpose hall. These spaces are linked with both covered and internal corridors and feature a central courtyard. Both nurseries are designed from a child’s point of view, ensuring that all services remain accessible and within reach at a lower height. A large slide in the courtyard connects the upper and lower levels, creating a fun way for the children to move between floors. For the adults, a spiral staircase offers the same efficiency.

In the P11 nursery, the buildings are thoughtfully arranged in a circular layout that weaves between turfed play areas. A walking path meanders throughout the entire site while remaining within the building blocks, ensuring a secure space for the children to wander. As the building blocks envelope the courtyard with gently curved walls, visual permeability is enhanced throughout the site, allowing a constant line of sight for the teachers to supervise on-going activities. Windows of varying shapes and sizes allow sunlight to filter inside the building, creating ever-changing shadows designed to stimulate the child’s curiosity and imagination. These unconventional nursery spaces use a harmonious blend of interior and exterior building features while accommodating educational and play areas, to cultivate a holistic learning experience for children. This results in a playful piece of architecture that piques the child’s interest on a cognitive, physical, and social level.
