The Edge of U - Thant

Kuala Lumpur

The Edge of U-Thant is a 3 storey strata link housing located on Jalan Penggawa and Jalan Ampang Hilir. This collaborative project of Bedmar and Shi and GDP Architects is situated in a lush green environment surrounded by an exclusive neighborhood of embassies, international schools, and a golf club, all within 3km of the city centre.Inspired by the beautiful mature rich landscape, this project was designed to capture the same spirit. During the conception of this project, the area was only limited to bungalow and low-rise developments. Instead of bungalows, which requires setbacks for each individual units, an idea of strata link housing was put forward as it requires only the perimeter setbacks and increases more flexible build-able spaces. This approach created the advantage of maximizing the nett worth of this 3.25 acre land.

The ground level is elevated from the street which offers the sense of exclusiveness and provides privacy to the residences, while forming a communal dwelling neighborhood. A basement that connects all the units was designed for the cars to be parked below street level, which opens the common level to be pedestrian-oriented without eliminating the idea of driving up to your front door.

There are 4 unit types with a total of 54 units designed as 2 parallel blocks, with the communal space in the middle connecting all the units together. Each unit type is provided with 3 car parks, 4+1 bedrooms with attached bathrooms, indoor lift, reflective indoor pool, and a garden into the communal garden space with a built-up area of 2600 sqm. The landscape of the common garden is designed around a pool with a deck adjoining the children’s pool, playground, and a clubhouse, with other facilities including a gym and function room. The elevation language is of clean lines and rectilinear forms made of natural materials and finishes, to blend into the surrounding, which makes it a modern timeless design.
